How to Watch a Livestream While You Work (Without a Second Monitor)
It’s 3 PM, the final is in the second half, and the requirements review is also at three. On a Mac, these “I need to be in both places” moments usually end one of three ways — two bad, one good.
Way 1: Switch back and forth (common, costly)
⌘Tab between the stream and your work. The problem is timing: the decisive play always happens in the thirty seconds you just looked away. And every switch breaks deep work — refocusing takes minutes, twenty switches a day eats an afternoon.
Way 2: Park the stream beside you (better, still taxed)
Split the screen or tile the stream into a region. Better than switching, but:
It takes space: a stream only needs to be visible, yet you pay a quarter to half the screen;
Your main task shrinks: documents and code get narrower, and efficiency drops with them;
It still gets buried: one window too many and the stream sinks below the others.
Way 3: Turn the stream into picture-in-picture (recommended)
PipNow turns the stream window into a floating mini window, pinned above everything:
Always in the corner: score and picture stay at the edge of your vision; your main task keeps its fullscreen;
Hover for detail: want to rewatch that play? Hover the mini window and the full-size view pops up; move away and it’s gone;
Click to pin the moment: goal scored? Click the mini window, pin the preview in the center, scrub the timeline, post a comment — then close and get back to work;
More than one stream: final and semi-final at the same time? Two mini windows.
The same pattern works for shopping streams (watch while you build spreadsheets), keynote streams (watch while taking notes), and event streams (watch while answering messages).
A bit of experience
Park the mini window at the edge of your vision — its value is “you’ll definitely notice when something happens,” not “stare at it”;
Keep the sound on; your peripheral vision handles more than you’d expect;
For truly focused sessions, close the mini window and recreate it later — ⌘⌥P takes a second.
Livestreams are the classic “low attention, high stakes” source — exactly the kind of information picture-in-picture handles best. If your version of this is market feeds or AI jobs, see the practical tips; for where the idea came from, read why we built PipNow.
