5 Ways to Keep a Window Always on Top in macOS (And When PiP Wins)

“Keep this window floating above everything” is something Windows users take for granted and Mac users have chased for years. Here are the five ways to do it on a Mac, and when each one is the right call.

1. Fullscreen + Mission Control (built-in)

Put the window you want to watch on its own fullscreen desktop; swipe over when needed.

2. Split View (built-in)

Drag a window to the edge and share the screen fifty-fifty.

3. Window managers (Magnet, Rectangle & co.)

Place windows into precise screen regions with keyboard shortcuts.

4. Pinning utilities

The community has various always-on-top tools — some of the older ones rely on system-injection tricks. When picking one, check two things: whether it still works after a macOS upgrade, and whether the permissions and implementation approach sit right with you.

5. Picture-in-Picture (PipNow)

The first four all “arrange the window.” PipNow flips the problem: turn the window you’re watching into a floating mini window, pinned above everything.

The key difference from plain pinning: a pinned window still occupies your field of view at full size. A mini window shrinks to exactly the size of “a status light” — glanceable, never in the way.
