MacBook Pro 13

The 13-inch MacBook is the most awkward multitasking machine: not much screen, plenty to do. Split two windows and each gets around 700 points — documents wrap every dozen words, code scrolls sideways. So you go back to ⌘Tab.

This isn’t a feelings piece. It’s arithmetic.

Your actual canvas

A MacBook Air 13” (M2/M3) defaults to 1470 × 956 points, about 1.4 million square points. A 13” MacBook Pro is 1440 × 900 — close enough that the numbers below hold.

The split-screen bill

Two windows, each 735 × 956:

Verdict: on a 13-inch screen, Split View puts both windows into “works, but feels bad” territory. And you’ve only placed two — a third has nowhere to go.

The mini-window bill

A typical floating mini window at 240 × 150 is about 36,000 square points — 2.6% of the screen.

Mini windowsTotal areaLeft for your main window
12.6%97.4%
37.8%92%
513%87%
615.6%84%

So four to six mini windows still leave your main task 84%+ of the screen. Compare that to Split View, where the main task gets 50%.

Three layouts that work on 13 inches

One: top-right, single. Main window nearly full width, one status light. Best for: focused writing with one thing to monitor.

Two: right column of three. Main window takes the left two-thirds, three mini windows stack on the right. Best for: coding plus an AI task plus a CI log.

Three: four windows in the corners. Best for: trading — chart, news, group chat, orders — with notes in the middle.

Two rules for small screens

One: don’t overfill. The math allows six; the eyes handle about three. On a small screen the strategy is few-but-accurate — keep only what genuinely needs peripheral awareness.

Two: you need a way to clear them instantly. A 13-inch screen has no slack. The moment you need the full display (a demo, a video, comparing documents), mini windows become obstacles. PipNow’s answer is holding fn: every mini window steps aside as a block, and returns when you release — no closing them one by one.

Why not just buy a monitor

An external display is nicer, but it doesn’t fix the real constraint: you still only have one attention span. Eight windows on a 27-inch screen are just as hard to prioritise.

A small screen forces subtraction — which can be an advantage. The prerequisite is a tool that shrinks secondary windows into corners, instead of a tiling tool that forces them to share.

On deciding which windows deserve a corner at all: the one-screen attention architecture. On the mechanics: PipNow tips.

MacBook Pro 13

Also zurück zu ⌘Tab.

Behalte nur, was wirklich periphere Wahrnehmung braucht.
